Echo Lake in October is something to witness. The surrounding hills ignite with color, the water doubles the spectacle, and the air turns crisp and clear. This is what New England fall was made for.
Western Maine peaks for fall foliage in the first two weeks of October — earlier at higher elevations, right around Columbus Day weekend at lake level. The Belgrade Lakes region is spectacular on its own, but you're also perfectly positioned for day trips to some of the most dramatic foliage in all of New England.
The ridge trail system in the Kennebec Highlands offers some of the best local foliage viewing. The higher lookouts frame a panorama of the lake basin in full October color — sugar maples on the slopes, red oaks along the ridges, and yellow birch wherever you look.
The open ledges at the top of Mount Pisgah may be the finest foliage viewpoint within easy striking distance of the lodge. You can see the entire Belgrade Lakes chain stretched out below, surrounded by thousands of acres of hardwood in full color. An unmissable October hike.
Heading north on Route 27 from Belgrade through New Vineyard and up to Kingfield is one of Maine's great autumn drives. The road climbs steadily through a corridor of brilliant hardwoods and then opens into the foothills below Sugarloaf. Allow two unhurried hours.
One of the most celebrated foliage destinations in the entire Northeast. The mountains surrounding Rangeley Lake turn brilliant two weeks before the lower elevations, and the combination of mountain summits reflected in lake water is genuinely breathtaking. Make a day trip in late September.
Rangeley info ↗At elevation, Sugarloaf and the surrounding Bigelow Range explode with color a full week before the lowlands. The Sugarloaf access road offers stunning views without hiking a step, and the gondola gives an aerial perspective over thousands of acres of fall hardwoods.
Sugarloaf fall ↗The Maine Office of Tourism publishes weekly foliage reports from late September through mid-October, with regional maps showing peak status. The best tool for timing your visit — foliage varies by elevation and year, so checking the week before you arrive is always worthwhile.
Maine foliage map ↗Foliage timing shifts with elevation, weather, and year. These ranges are typical — a warm September pushes color later; an early cold snap accelerates it. The Maine foliage report (updated weekly) is the most reliable current guide.
